Bobby Owen stood for a time in silence, looking down thoughtfully at the dead man’s face. A small, insignificant face, lacking even that touch of repose and dignity which death, even violent death, so often gives, and one that Bobby had never seen before. Of that at least he was sure.
Yet this same man was found dead with a detailed and accurate plan of Bobby Owen’s new London flat. Why? The plot soon thickens when a man with a grievance against Bobby turns up to identify the dead man … But Bobby will need many more beads on the thread before he understands the murderous connection to an old Army Officer, and what necessitated the death of a ‘burglar’.
The House of Godwinsson was first published in 1948, the twenty-fifth of the Bobby Owen mysteries, a series eventually including thirty-five novels. This edition features a new introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.
“What is distinction? … in the works of Mr. E.R. Punshon we salute it every time.” Dorothy L. Sayers
“Tense horror” John Betjeman
The House of Godwinsson A Bobby Owen Mystery edition by ER Punshon Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Bobby Owens of Scotland Yard is up against a confusing mix of crimes in this, the twenty-fifth mystery in the series (first published 1948). The immensely valuable jewels of a duchess have been stolen. So have other noteworthy jewels. And in the seedy neighborhood of Angel Alley, a man has been found shot dead with a plan of Bobby's flat in his pocket. The cast of characters is diverse and fascinating. The aristocratic Godwinsson family is headed by the autocratic Colonel Godwinsson, descended from ancient Saxon kings. He sees himself as the rightful heir to the throne of England, only kept out of it by that upstart William the Conqueror, and his manner reflects his views. His sons are high-handed too. There seems to be some connection between this regal family and the nefarious goings-on in Angel Alley.
As for the crooks, they are wonderful. One has multiple personas. Another is a terror with a knife, and a terrible whiner when caught. Another is an ex-pugilists who gets into a terrific fast fight with Bobby that both of them rather enjoy. I loved the fight scenes and their aftermath. There's a bit of comedy mixed in with the action. E.R. Punshon delivers a lot of dry wit in this story.
The excellent introduction makes good reading too. Curtis Evans makes an especially interesting observation on the changing role of Bobby's wife Olive in the series. And he suggests that Punshon's years in the still wild American West might explain the authenticity of the fight scenes.

The House of Godwinsson A Bobby Owen Mystery edition by ER Punshon Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
E.R. Punshon did it again! Another page turner-just when I thought the plot was going in one direction off he takes you on another!
Well written with many twists and turns. A delight to read.
I would recommend reading this book to anyone who loves mysteries.
Well, the plot has a huge hole in it, but you don't know that until you consider the mystery as a whole. Otherwise, superb.
In some ways an old fashioned whodunnit , yet the story is made more interesting and complex by the author which keeps the reader guessing.
Bobby Owens is back in London. He and Olive have found a flat and are still dealing with limited resources. However Olive always makes sure there is enough of her share to cover his insatiable appetite. The story as always is complex and multi layered. A great read.
Totally British writing, the words used will testify to that.
Brainy detective story, everything spelled out for the reader detail by detail. Still, it's a refreshing, logical and Scotland Yard style.
I'm definitely going to read more of this series, especially since the books are offered at an affordable cost.
Giving this book for free as "sampler" is a very good marketing practice.
